The challenges for an open society set before us by the COVID-19 epidemic require agility, quick response and flexibility. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, in conditions of reduced financial support for civil society, the Foundation Open Society – Macedonia continues to work diligently on its development and support.

We have provided 190,000 dollars in support of working conditions for CSOs in times of crisis, that are a key segment of a democratic society and are affected by the state of emergency, as well as other segments of society.

The grant schemes include and will enable the monitoring of institutions and the functioning of the system in times of crisis in the areas of the fight against corruption, the judiciary and the prevention and protection of discrimination, which are priorities in the EU accession process. In this way, CSOs will continue to actively monitor the processes in the crisis and post-crisis period and will respond in order to improve policies and practices in these areas.

At the same time, part of the funds will provide support for local civil society organizations in Bitola, Tetovo and Štip for monitoring the local authorities in the areas of environment, spending public money and urban planning and advocacy based on the requirements and priorities of citizens.

Over 35 civil society organizations that actively work and contribute to the protection and promotion of the values of the open society received financial support.

We at the Open Society Foundation – Macedonia remain committed to the development of civil society and the commitment to the active participation of citizens in society – in creating policies and practices that contribute to the promotion of the rule of law and good governance and that will enable free, democratic, multicultural and multiethnic society in which there is room for all.
