Fake news is already part of our daily lives, and the need for media literacy is overwhelming. Media literacy enables institutions to be transparent and accountable, which is essential for the development of democracy. Citizens need and must be media literate, this will be their tool in the fight against fake news, but it will also provide room for fruitful debate, differing opinions, and it is certainly a tool for fostering critical thinking. Young people as a particularly important target group do not have the skills and knowledge to recognize fake news or check data, nor is there any education to assist them. In this regard, it is particularly important that media literacy is included as part of the formal educational process in schools.

Media reforms in Macedonia are moving slowly, much of the process has been started, but stalled, the media is operating in difficult conditions, and often the quality of journalistic reporting is not at a satisfactory level, which further impedes the process of media literacy.

In times of rapid technological development and digitization, the impact of new technologies on the work of institutions and finding solutions to the challenges and problems that institutions and citizens face are particularly important themes to be discussed. Digitalization has the potential to reduce corruption as it reduces human influence in the process of communication between citizens and institutions, but digitization itself is not the solution to all problems, and the culture of an open and democratic society should be encouraged. A comprehensive approach is needed to insist on increasing media literacy, efficiency, transparency and accountability of institutions and thus increasing trust in institutions.

All these issues and challenges posed before the Macedonian society will be discussed at the conference “e-Society.mk” which is held for the 14th time this year under the topic “Media literate citizens for accountable institutions”.
