On 10 June 2021, at the dairy farm “Požarenka” in the village Slavej, municipality Krivogaštani, the Association of Citizens LAG Agro Leader organized a final event within the project “Response to the socio-economic effects of COVID-19 by supporting vulnerable groups at low-paid workers, workers who are part of the informal economy and temporarily employed workers”, and financially supported by the Foundation Open Society – Macedonia.

The event was symbolically called “The Peasant Rebellion”, after the historical novel by the Croatian writer August Shenoa from 1877, which depicts the struggle of the Croatian peasants with the feudal lords and the aristocracy of that time.

Kire MILOVSKI, Program Coordinator at the Foundation Open Society – Macedonia stressed the support of the Foundation provided through the joint COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund of the Open Society Foundations, in order to mitigate the socio-economic consequences of the impact of Kovid-19 on the vulnerable groups. The aim of this project was to better understand the effect of government policies on vulnerable groups, and to contribute to mitigating the socio-economic consequences for them.

The COVID-19 pandemic has raised the need to introduce digitalisation in the agricultural sector, and to introduce e-sales of fresh or processed agricultural and livestock products from agricultural holdings. In order to contribute to the improvement of the socio-economic development of the agricultural holdings, the Association for Rural Development Local Action Group AGRO LEADER focused its activities on the introduction of online sales of fresh and processed agricultural products by creating the online platform Domashno.mk.

Through the publication “The position of rural women in Macedonian society”, a kind of analysis was made that identifies the most important problems and challenges of women in rural areas, in terms of access to rights and services from social and health care, as well as the aspect of opportunities for their professional development and active involvement in economic activities.

The donations so far by the Foundation for Vulnerable Categories of Citizens amount to $ 1 million, through which, in addition to helping socially disadvantaged citizens, we have provided capacity building for associations and think-tanks that contribute to the development of civil society and in time crisis and their direct impact on policymaking.

Marina Todorovska, program coordinator at LAG Agro Leader presented in detail the activities of this association in the past period as well as for future action plans and further survival and development of the platform domasno.mk.

The representative of the think-tank Analytica Borče Trenovski, presented the conclusions and recommendations of the “Analysis of the effect of COVID-19 on workers who are part of the informal economy and temporary workers, through proposed measures to support them” and which also was developed within this regional project, financially supported by the Foundation Open Society – Macedonia.
