What is the factual situation regarding the transparent display of salaries?

The amount of the net salary is rarely published on the job advertisements. Employers persistently refuse to comply with the legal obligation, which obliges them to state the monetary amount of the basic or the amount from the lowest to the highest level of the net salary for the job for which a worker is required, when hiring through a public announcement. How does this affect the possibility of discrimination in the workplace?

The advertisers usually emphasize that the salary will be agreed upon after the completion of the employment process with the successful candidate, because they believe that in that way they will be able to provide a better offer for themselves, i.e. to determine a lower salary for the employee. This is especially true of negotiations in which the successful candidate for employment is a woman because the very position of the labor market puts women in a less favorable position for negotiations.

The data show that women are the vast majority of the inactive population, often earning less and working in lower paid industries. The statement points out that RN Macedonia, except in certain parts and to some extent, does not have the necessary legal basis to reduce the gap and that in reality almost no steps are taken to truly address the problem.

What are the benefits of eliminating the gender salary gap?

The document states conclusions and recommendations that aim to improve the Macedonian legal system by setting the boundaries for better labor and anti-discrimination legislation.

The conclusions are drawn from the public policy document “SALARY UPON AGREEMENT” – Reducing the gender gap through transparency of salaries, and can be seen below. The full document is available in Macedonian and English:
