The census is an extremely important statistical operation for a country. In North Macedonia, in the past few decades, politicians have largely reduced the census to ethnic census, which is particularly risky because the census simply does not go far enough with the ethnic census. The population census provides an in-depth insight into the situation on the ground and provides basic data on which the creation of policies and development strategies in various social areas is based.

It is of great importance for the citizens to be impartially, qualitatively and reliably informed about the whole process of conducting this statistical operation, but even more to be educated about why the census is important and why it should be successfully implemented. Citizens need to understand the importance of the census for the development and improvement of the quality of life in the country, i.e. to understand that the census is not and must not be a political-party, ethnic-religious “battlefield”, but a key statistical operation that will enable quality development policies.

In order to contribute to raising the awareness of the citizens about the importance of the census and its successful implementation, the NGO Infocenter, with financial support from the Foundation Open Society – Macedonia, in the period March-May 2021, will implement the project “Census 2021 – well-informed citizens for a successful census” which will include several activities.

As part of the project, an online educational-information campaign will be realized on the importance of the census and its role in creating and implementing development strategies and policies in various socially important areas such as economy, health, social policy, regional development, education, agriculture, energy, infrastructure etc. Additionally, informative-educational contents will be created for the specialized website Census Finally (http://popis.mk/) in the format of articles/news/interviews/statements related to the preparation and realization of the Census 2021, but also journalistic analytical stories that will delve deeper into the importance of the census and census data for creating strategies and development policies in specific social areas.
